Internet Pirates: How Chrysalis Students Perceive Your Decision Not to Pay

Hello PCMS,

A new debate has surfaced among the Media Squad, but this time it is not about high-speed internet and access, its about what we do with the internet. Let's set up the scenario:

You go to your friends house for the evening... You're like, "Hey, did you hear that new Jay-Z song, it's like 'wohhh.'" Then your friend is like, "OMG! I'll download it right now!" You're like, "YEAAAHHHH!" Friends like, "Cool."

Your friend "hops" on Limewire and gets the song in, like, 5 seconds. It's totally awesome and the two of you spend the entire night imagining that you are in New York (Now you're in Newwww YOOOORRRKKK...). It's like, the best night of your life.

Oooops, I forgot to mention that the two of you just broke the law! You just downloaded music illegally. Why? Because you didn't pay for it.

Anyway, some pretty prominent people are defending illegal music "pirates" such as yourself. Follow this link to read about a film director that actually helps a French internet pirate raise money in order to pay legal fees (That's right, someone who profits from their copyrighted material is helping someone who has stolen from others people who also make money off of their copyrights).

Ok, now to the good stuff. Here's what two of your peers had to say:

"To me, stealing or pirating from other people is wrong, but I'm not all that innocent from that. Just this morning I heard students in my class say, "Well, everyone does it..." - E.M.

"If someone creates a product, he or she should make a profit from that product that he or she created. That person worked hard to make that product. If I was that person, I for sure would want to make a profit off of my product." - S.M.

These two examples represent a majority of the responses from the Media Squad. In fact, only one person argued that music/video pirating was "o.k." What do you think Chrysalis? Be sure to comment below.

Progressive Thinking,
C.S.
