Most of you have probably heard the recent developments regarding North Korea and their missle launching. Well, let me tell you the significance of this, since sometimes we hear these things, and really miss the underlying implications of these events.
North Korea is not an ally of the United States, or of many nations for that matter. In fact, China is about the only world superpower friend/ally that they have. North Korea is an impoverished and communist nation in which the United States has essentially stopped dealing with since it fought with them in the Korean War.
North Korea has found an interest in essentially threatening the United States anyway it can in order to get assistance in its failing economy. North Korea bullies other countries surrounding it, threatens to create war, and other things, all in hopes of the United States and other countries assisting them.
North Korea successfully launched missles that are capable of carrying a nuclear missle-head. So, what does this mean for the United States and other ally nations? Well, it means that they will need to defuse the situation! Think about it this way... You've got an irrational communist leader (Kim Jong) with a bunch of nuclear missles... this is a problem!
North Korea is still in the preliminary stages of missle design, and at best could only reach the State of Alaska (across the Pacific Ocean) from mainland North Korea. The biggest problem the United States has with this behavior is that they are voiding and breaking United Nations sanctions/rules that state that North Korea can not have or produce nuclear arms, or any type of device that could guide those weapons (hence why they were launching "satellites" into orbit).
I reccommend that you keep posted on these developments, and in particular I want you to think about and watch how the United States "deals" with North Korea. Robert Gates, the Secretary of Defense stated, "I’m tired of buying the same horse twice,"

ReplyDeleteSamuel, not interested in Korea?! Did you know that in South Korea they wanted to have American baseball too, so they started their own MLB. They even kept all the same names, so there may be a Houston Astros team, but in Korea! Instead of hotdogs at the game they eat dried fish :)
